Moqueca Capixaba, Brazilian Seafood Stew

This recipe can be done with a combination of fish and seafood. I used only tiger prawns and served with white rice and 'farofa'(manioc flour roasted)

Moqueca is very popular dish in Brazil and have two main branches. One is from ‘Espírito Santo’ and it is refered as ‘capixaba’ and the other is from Bahia named moqueca ‘baiana’. The main difference is that moqueca capixaba doesn't have coconut milk and palm oil (óleo de dendê) . It’s prepared with annatto, also called urucum - its original indigenous name. The urucum is a derivative of the achiote trees found in tropical regions of the Americas and is commonly used in Latin American and Caribbean cuisines as a coloring agent and for flavoring. The indigenous peoples of Central and South America used the seeds to make body paint and lipstick.

In Brazil, urucum is known as ‘colorau’ and is used as red food coloring. If not found, you can use hot paprika instead.

Dedo de moça pepper is very small and very hot oblong red chili peppers.

I made my with the beautiful traditional and locally made brazilian clay pots that preserves heat very well.

If you want to use fish, the quantity of 2 pounds will serve 4. My favorite type of fish for this recipe is sea bass or other white fleshed fish.

You need:

2lb cleaned deveined medium shrimp or less for king /tiger praws

7 ripe tomatoes, each chopped into 8 pieces

3 medium onions, chopped

1 chopped garlic cloves

1/2 cup of water ( you can use 2 tins of tomatoes instead - and don't add the water)

3 selections of colored peppers

1 pinch of finely minced, fresh dedo de moça pepper or other small, hot chilli.

A few drops of fresh lemon juice

Freshly ground black pepper

Salt and cilantro to taste

Season the prawns with lemon juice.

Fry with olive oil (2 tablespoons or less) the onions, garlic and chilli - stir so it doesn't burn.

Add the urucum ( or hot paprika) and the slice peppers. Add the tomatoes/water or the 2 tins . Leave low/medium heat to reduce...( add the fish now)

Once reduced well (mine by half) and peppers are cooked. I season it to taste. Add a bit heat with chilli if you like hotter. ( i didn't)

Add the prawns and cook them for 5 - 7 min until they ready... than serve. Enjoy!

Marking tools; the inventory.

I wrote this post as part of the Gadgetmania, hosted by Marina {Frabjous Couture} here are my favourite marking tools.

Marking your garments correctly is one of most important sewing steps, only second to pressing. There are many types of products available that suits different varieties of fabrics but there aren’t many differences in terms of quality by brands. It’s a matter of personal taste and need. I suggest you hold a selection and use them accordingly to specific projects.

The following marking tools will help you transfer symbols and pattern guidelines for accurate construction.

Chalks or Tailor’s Chalk:

There are two main formulations available (Talc-based and wax based) numerous formats and 4 main colours (white, yellow, blue, red).

The composition should be indicated on the box. If not, you can tell it by touch, as the wax-based chalk feels less smooth and break in chunks (don’t worry, they will not leave waxy residue and can be removed by heat) and talc-based is more powdery when using. The classic format is a thin wedge, which also can be found as a chalk wheel, which makes a finer line. The same principle applies to lipstick shape.

There is new fusion between chalk and pen branded as a Chaco pen and a Slim Chaco Pen (pens filled with chalk instead of inks with available refills)

Liquid markers or water-soluble pens:

Liquid markers and water soluble pens look like felt tips pen, where ink is erased in cold water. It is important to highlight that steam (HEAT) can actually make the marking permanent, so always check by testing your fabric first. These markers are also unsuitable for fabrics that show water marks, for obvious reasons. They can be found in blue, red and purple colour. An eraser pen is also available for removing markings made by any water-soluble marker.

Air-erasable pens:

According to the manufacture the marks disappear within 24 to 48 hours.

Pencils:

They can be removed either by brushing, erasing with a fabric eraser or by soaking in water.

Hot-iron transfer pencils:

This pencil is used to trace a design and transfer it to the fabric using heat.

Dressmaking Carbon:

Used with a tracing wheel, dressmaking carbon allows to trace quickly and accurately, as both layers can be marked at the same time. There are many types and colors available on the market.

Two main dressmaking carbons types are wax-based and wax-free. Wax-free is becoming more available as many suppliers realise the demand for this type of product because some customers complained of the issue of residue left by wax-based products.

Most brands have a pack with 5 varieties of colour sheets same size (23x28cm), and the larger sheet size I found was Burda (83 cm x 57 cm) but only provided 2 sheets.

Tracing wheels:

The most common are the serrated and the smooth-edge tracing wheels. The serrated tracing wheel makes a distinguished doted line and is suitable for most fabrics except for delicate ones, while the smooth edge tracing wheel transfers a continuous line, more suitable for delicate fabrics or delicate paper patterns.

There is also double tracing wheel that enables you to trace seam line and cutting edges at the same time and has an adjustable range of 10 to 30mm.

Tailor's Tacker:

It is a small gadget that substitute the tailors tack process. It contains two pieces of chalk and a little pin through the middle that will marks both sides of fabric at the same time when twisted. This item is not very easily found.

Thread & needle:

Mostly used to mark darts by using so-called tailor tucks. Sometimes, especially in couture, all stitching lines are thread-traced using fine thread and needle that don't leave marks on delicate fabrics.

Pins:

They can be used to help mark darts in conjunction with a marker or on their own. There are not advised to be used in leather, fine fabrics or very loose knits

Scissors:

Best way to mark pattern notches that will allow the junction of the pattern pieces. Just nick the fabric slightly. Do the same for double and triple notches, making only once.

Iron (Pressing)

you can use the iron to press tucks and other design features into shape. I advice you to refrain from marking with an iron as a pressing mistake can be difficult to correct.

My personal favourites are

the wax chalk
a Japanese white pencil for quilting
Wax-free grey (non-coloured) dressmaker carbon. (sorry, I don’t know the brand as I buy then per loose sheet)
I also own both types of tracing wheels.

I dislike any marking tools in colour (except my lipstick chalk yellow marker) because they tend to be very hard to remove. I personally don’t use pens because I press my garments a lot and I don’t like soaking (even if it’s by hand) at every little step and they have a tendency to reappear once dried. I also notice that the colour blue is the worst offender to get off the fabric. If you have a carbon wax emergency, I found out that some people melt the wax using the iron and use paper towers to dry it. You need to fold the item in paper and carefully heat it. It takes a while.

My final advice is take careful consideration when choosing the correct marking tool as they have the potential to ruin your project and always make a test patch.

Millionaires shortbread a brasileira!

To make this delicious recipe you need:

Base:

250g / 9oz / 2 and 1 quarter cups of: plain flour all purpose flour

75g / 3oz / halft cup of : sugar ( superfine works best)

175g / 6oz / 3 quarters cup unsalted butter, soft

Filling:

If you are in Brazil or Latin America use 'doce de leite'/ Dulce de leche. ( I did )

If note you will need to make the caramel :

90g / 3 1/2 oz / 7 tbsp unsalted butter, diced

90g /3 1/2 oz scant half cup of light muscovado sugar ( brown )

2x 397 g / 14oz cans of condensed milk

Topping

Your favourite chocolate. Can be plain, milk, dark, white or all marbled . Its really personal choice.

I went for half dark , half pain (100g/one bar) and white chocolate starts

How to do:

Pre heat the oven 180C/ 350F/ Gas4 . Greaseproof your tin (mine 23x23) with butter or greaseproof paper.

Rub the butter with the flour and sugar until looks like breadcrumbs, work until forms a dough. Press the sought to cover the base.

Prick with a fork an bake for 20 mins.

Its very light brown otherwise its overcooked.

If making the filling, put the butter, muscavo sugar and condense milk into a pan and heat gently, stir constantly and once the sugar dissolve, bring to the boil. Once boiled, reduce heat and keep simmering, stirring every 5 mins until its thunked and turned caramel colour.

Pour the filling over the cooked biscuits and leave to cool down. I used ' doce de leite"my friend Cris gave me.

Once it's cooled, melt the chocolate and cover. Decorate or not...

Settles quite slowly so I put mine on the freezer for one hours and took it out.

It was a little piece of heaven !

Scissors,
Heart templates,
Embroidery needle and thread
Button(s)
Cardigan
Sewing machine optional

How to:

Cut the heat shapes, sew a running stitch to join them together and the button.

I used my machine to embroidery stitches

Brother innovis 350.

Pin or baste in place and embroider the hearts on the cardigan

For the curled effect on the sleeves, stretch the cardigan while sewing. If not your taste, just sew the ribbon after hemming.

Did the pattern turn out like the picture or drawing? Yes ,for each the different pattern piece.

Did you make any alterations or modifications? I lower the neckline,added 3 cm to the body length and removing the back dart and mix and match the patterns.

First worn: 14 Feb 2012

Will you make it again? I want to make the complete pattern {M5971} in wool with the sleeves and I know then I will face alterations and modifications. That's for winter 2012...
Its time to make summer dresses . PS even when its freezing outside for the photos . LOL

Total price: 1 m of jersey for £8 . Not bad !

What did you particularly like or dislike about this pattern: I liked the neckline but wished it were lower. I cannot comment on the rest.

Did you use new skills or a particular skill: Yes, I used jersey for the 1st time and it turned out fine. I didn't scared me to try again but I think curved seams and too many pattern pieces was too much for a jersey virgin. I recommend that you use straight seams and as little as possible. If so these dress would have been so quick to make....

The Red Dress that almost broke my ♥

Dear readers, I started this dress on the beginning of the month so I could wear it for valentines dinner , be part of SewWeekly RED theme and enter PatternReview 'Red Dress Context"

What can I say, besides its been a journey.

The pattern had a lovely sweetheart neckline .

It's started quite well, I did my research on how to sew jersey for the 1st time.. you see, I was a jersey virgin!!!

I love the beginning of sewing where i imagine the pattern, than write my research and pattern alterations on a sewing notebook. {I just wished I had a better calligraphy...}

This pattern wasn't intended for knits but I would take that in my advantage so I wouldn't need to do so many complicated bust alterations.

Armed with my books, my sewing machine and some fabric scraps I started testing for the optimum stitch type and length.

That included the seam finishes with an overlock.

Once that decided, I had my sewing plan of action.

Concerned about the stretching on the neckline and major seams, I tested some types of interfaces I had at home. Only If they didn't work I would had gotten a knit interface but it worked perfectly.

The result of my 20 minutes research made me smile.

I got a nice reference to use for further similar knits.

My goal is to build this 'personal knowledge" notes so I can reference when I need. I think when you rush you lose a lot opportunities to learn and really understand what you doing.

PS: Did you like my new notebook??

The beginning went well

until... 1st fitting... You can see is large but not bad at all as I didn't tissue fit.

After alterations added to my notes ...

Bobbin decided to have a fit...

Making a hole on the back of the pattern....

So I rethreaded the bobbin and cleaned the machine...

And cut the a second back pattern, this time from another dress because I thought it solve some fitting issues...

and when I was returning to smile, making the skirt...

needle broke.. needless to say I went to bed very upset.

5 days later the dress was still an UFO . Only on valentines afternoon when I was preparing a lovely meal I had nothing new to wear I decided to tackle the red dress again.

Well , I wasn't let this dress break my heart. When I saw HRH eyes I knew I had done well.

Tomorrow I will show you how it looked and let you know how to vote for me on the RED DRESS Contest.

Hi girls,

Many of us want to have unique items a.k.a homemade but at the same time we want the items to look beautiful and expensive.

I made a small list on what I feel make a garment stand out and hope you can also contribute with your own tips.

It is very important to have and mantain a straight and accurate seam allowance. This requires a lot of practice but will make a lot of difference in the overall look of the finish item. A good way to improve is to use the right marking techniques. Check the stitches lengthen in a patch test to see if they are correct to the look you want to achieve and avoid damaging the fabric.

Marking the garment correctly. If you do, it’s easier to put the pieces together and fewer mistakes can also improve the final result.

Keep it tidy girl. Trim, clip curves, clean as you sew... Like a professional chef the work is better if the workspace is clean as you cook!!!

PRESS PRESS PRESS. You can never press too much. If you press in every step you will have a better finish item. This is so important to highlight because I can assure you it is not a waste of time. Invest on a press cloth to avoid fabric scorches.

Trust your instincts. Instead of keep it safe following the rules you may want to follow your creative ideas and match things different, add and subtract items and that will make your garment stand out of the standard pattern. It can also be mix of colours, unusual prints or trims. Another area to follow your instincts is questioning some pattern instructions decisions. "Does the recommended button size or position will look on me?" Etc.

Look at expensive items and what do they have in common? Professional-looking seam finishes. ‘The devil is on the detail ‘as they say it. Look at the details. Do they have top-stitching? French seams?hems?, sleeve placement? Think how you can incorporate small details for maximum impact. These couture techniques are simple to learn and add a luxurious feel. I personally love topstitching and basting my items.

Be fabric wise. I’m not going to say that cheaper fabrics are bad because I do like a good quality. The point here is not the price point but the quality of the fabric. Good quality fabric will make the item look more expensive and create a luxurious feel. Also, the fabric must be compatible with the design by referencing with items you see in RTW. Does the pattern need a fluid or rigid fabric... Can it work with what i already have, etc?

Have a Break. I mean, slow down. I’m guilty of trying to finish something too quickly too and that affects the final result. It’s good to slow down and really work patiently on your item. It will be worth on the result.

Fit to your body shape. Sometimes we look at the pattern and unconsidered ourselves and when we finish the garment it doesn’t look good, not only the style, but the actual fitting of the garment. Look for books and clear directions.

Once you are aware of your adjustments, all your garments will have a constant modification and soon you will master it.
Once you master your specify changes,your garments will look more professional and will stand out. because of quality of the fit.

Last but not least, I hate to admit but there are so many the advantages of hand sewing instead of machine; as it will add value to certain garments as jackets when machine stiches can make parts of the item bulky.

My 1st ever amigurumi was pattern from The Make Lounge when I attended a class late 2010 .
I was the most improved in class as I didn't knew anything and the class wasn't for beginners. Oppsss!
I went home with a half a duck and the pattern while everyone else had finished theirs.
He isn't perfect but I loved making him...
This adorable imperfect duck been named "SpiderDuck" because HRH said he had Spiderman Colous! Oh well thats boys for you.. they never grow up....

Well, It wasValentines day and SpiderDuck needed a girlfriend...

Soft filling

Fabric pencil

Technique used:

Blanket stitch

Patchwork

Pattern( Enlarge 300%)

How to make it:

Transfer the pattern using the fabric pencil in the different colour felt.

Pin the leaves in the smaller heart

Secure the leaves and the circles by blanket stitch

Using blanket stitch secure the smaller heart into the larger one.

Using the same technique, join the from and back of the big heart, leaving a space to fill with soft filling.

Sew to close it!

SW Theme: UFO. I didn't had an unfinished item but I had less than 1 metre {1 yard} of fabric scrap from my wool dress.

Size:Size 10 ( Uk 12)

Pattern:Colette Meringue Skirt

Year:2011/2012 [Modern]

Notions: A small zipper from Brazil brought by my mom as a gift to me.[3 cm] They were supposed to be used for pockets. I just loved the idea of an exposed zipper and I didn't had any other I could used and Im trying to limit my buys and be creative with what I already have.

Time to complete: 1 Hour and a bit in total. Although I spend almost an afternoon because I keep being distracted by HRH and other domestic tasks. This is very simple to make

Did the pattern turn out like the picture or drawing? Yes and I didn't really like the length so I chopped about 3 cm.

Did you make any alterations or modifications? No. That's why I love making skirts or pants!

First worn: Feb 2012

Will you make it again? I want to do as a dress version or using the scallops differently.

What did you particularly like or dislike about this pattern: I disliked the scallops edge hand sewing technique so I ignored and used a craft technique instead and made into a separate band. I will used for the next one as I feel very inspired to try other versions. {See Inspiration below}

Did you use new skills or a particular skill: No, I should use the hand sewing as explained on the book and I unfortunately preferred the "fast option" to be able to participate on the SW challenge.

This year I feel I will want to slow down to allow more learning but I also want to join in on the challenges so I feel with my clothes it will be a mix of the two. I will cut corners if I feel the quality won't get overlooked as I still want to make very good quality items.

Total cost: As I clean my 5 bags {2 years worth of} scraps and left over from other projects I manage to find loads of potential 1 metre or more scraps and I was delighted to dig in and start reducing my forgotten stash. So I would think this didn't cost me anything and the zippers were brought for about £5 the box of 6 of them.

If you want an easy, soft and moist cake, this recipe is for you!

175g of unsalted butter
400g plain flour
1 teaspoon vanilla extra
1teaspoon baking power
2 eggs
170g muscavo sugar
150g good quality chocolate ( I use 70% cocoa)

Method:

Mix the butter( soft) and broken chocolate and melt on the microwave (1 min each time, mix well)

With an eletric whisk, beat the eggs,sugar and vanilla together.

In another bowl mix the dry ingredients .

Whisk together the butter/chocolate with the sugar/eggs mixture.

Add the flour/baking powder (dry ingredients) and whisk well until a creamy texture...

Ohhh its so good already!

Bake for 25 -30 mins ( don't overbake... looks a bit wet when you take it out the oven and that will keep the bottom moist) 180C -Pre heated. Very

SW Theme: Down Under{ Opposite season: Summer} [SW post]

Fabric: I don't know for sure, feel like cotton and stretch a little.Its like a very soft t-shirt fabric and it is quite thin and not suitable for the Uk weather. I got it because I liked the feel on the skin. I'm not sure you can see the red are hibiscus flowers.

Pattern: Self drafted

Year: Contemporary.

Notions: none. Just slip on and go.

Time to complete: It took 1 hour drafting and 2 hours draping /sewing

First worn: February 2012

Wear again? Yes, will fit perfectly for the Brazilian weather or on holiday to wear as a bikini cover.

Total Cost: ~£10 { $15 or R$27}

The Pattern. I drafted a basic body block, made a boat neckline and used pleas and tucks to shape close to the body by draping the fabric and shaping it direct on my body.The sleeves were from the Colette Taffy blouse as they are perfect fun & Floaty and great if arms aren't toned.

Inspiration: Brazilian Carnival.

Carnival (Carnaval in Portuguese) is celebrated all over Brazil, officially for 4 days of wild fun but the reality it takes from 2 weeks or more depending on where you live. Most Brazilian take holidays during this season { summer} and Carnival parties are the peak of the celebrations that sums up our culture. Did you know our festivities dates back as far as 1723. We also enjoy going to the beach and outdoor sports so our wardrobe is full of floaty cooling clothes and color.

Will you make it again? Yes, not in the UK unless we have another heat wave like the one in October {26C} Did I mention it was cold here... how did I manage to survive a photo i'm not sure.

Did you use any new skills? Draping. Not sure I did if right but I liked the process and result.

What wardrobe gap does this fill? Unfortunately the UK summer doesn't really call for such thin dress and I feel it can be only used on a beach holiday or at my hometown where temperatures never go lower than 17C. I think my mom will steal these dress for sure!

Hello residents at the House of Pinheiro! Mind if I join the party?!

My name is Janene and I've just popped over from Ooobop!

I feel very honoured to have been asked to write a guest post and also to have met the lovely Rachel in person. We had a right old giggle at Peggy Pickles Pillowcase Dress Embellishment meet up in December. What a fabulous evening that was.

How long have you been sewing:

I started sewing when I was very young, out of necessity… and because of my own stupidity in rejecting the clothes my mum used to make for me. Of course the upshot of that was that if I wanted anything new, I had to make it myself! I never focussed on the joy of sewing until much later on. A couple of years ago in fact when I joined Burdastyle and there started a love affair with all things sewing related and a new found friendship with a whole host of inspiring, encouraging and wonderful fellow bloggers.

What do you love most about sewing garments:

I'm a freelance graphic designer by day and though that incorporates a heap load of creativity, I am still mostly working to fulfil another customer's requirements. Design to order so to speak. So its great to put any left over energy into creating something the way I see fit! When everyone has gone to sleep, its just me, the radio, the whirring of my machine and invariably a cat on my lap… my world!

Of course the beauty of making your own is that you get to choose every aspect of it: colour, fit, fabric… but most of all the thing I love about sewing garments is the accomplishment, the learning something new, the pride when someone compliments you and asks where you bought it from!

What do you hate most about sewing garments:

I don't thing there is anything I truly hate about it. There are times (many times) when I'm frustrated by a process but I am aware that every testing moment is a lesson and there's nothing better than rising to a challenge and succeeding!

What do you want to accomplish this year with regard to the challenge:

I have decided not to challenge myself as much this year. I went a bit crazy last year, trying and mostly failing to keep up with all the wonderful online challenges set. So instead I am focussing more on needs closer to home. Things that are needed and that will be cherished rather than just sitting pretty in the wardrobe!

Your biggest non-sewing goal of 2012:

My biggest non-sewing goal of 2012 is to get a better work/play balance. I'm a bit of a workaholic, by my own making and I don't really sleep much. So more play time and less work I guess!

What are your favourite sewing/fashion blogs:

Thats a toughie! There are sooooo many wonderful blogs out there including 'The House' of course! The only problem is keeping up with them. I follow so many now my Email inbox groans under the strain! But I can never get enough of them. I do believe I am truly obsessed!

What are you wearing:

Today I am mostly wearing a little red dress that I have been meaning to make for such a long time. And I saw this guest spot as a perfect opportunity that came with its own deadline! I'm truly rubbish without a deadline so all thanks to Rachel! It is but a glamourous toile, though not a wearable one I'm afraid! The fabric is actually quite awful!

Facts:

Pattern: Vintage Butterick 8043

Material /Fabric: Very cheap, shiny, synthetic blend

Notions: 20" invisible zipper, 2.5m satin bias binding

Time to complete: Over the course of 3 evenings

Difficulty: Intermediate. All very basic apart from the side fronts!

First worn: Just for the photoshoot!

Wear again: Unfortunately not. The fabric was really unstable and tears very easily. I tried to darn a hole under the arm hole (yes you heard right, 'darn'!) but more little tears started to appear randomly down the side. I didn't cry too much! I buy cheap 'interesting' fabric to make toiles nowadays, just in case they do turn out to be wearable!

Total Cost: £3 for fabric, £1 zip and binding from stash.

Did it look like the photo/drawing on the pattern envelope once you were done sewing with it?

I think you have to be realistic when using a vintage pattern. I so don't look like any fashion drawing ever created and so the finished dress is never going to look the same on me as it does on the packet!

Pattern Construction:

The gathers around the neck took 2 attempts. But the rest of the construction was relatively simple. There are no darts at the waist, just shaped panels, princess seams I guess, which can be adjusted easily.

Would you recommend it to others:

Yes. It would look and feel gorgeous in a more sophisticated fabric.

Were the instructions easy to follow:

On the whole yes. The diagrams are very basic and take a bit of working out but common sense and a bit of 'mental making up' got me through it!

Pattern alterations or any design changes:

I am not so accomplished with pattern grading - yet! - so I usually buy a pattern with the correct bust size and rework the waist and hip lines. Quite necessary on vintage patterns… boy did those 50s ladies have tiny waists!

Conclusion:

Despite it only being a toile. I quite like how this one turned out. I loved how easy it was to make the adjustments and I really liked binding the hems with satin bias. Such a lovely vintage finish. I will definitely give it another go sometime soon

Mr Ooobop! is very camera-happy at the moment. Which is very handy indeed. And which is why all the pictures are all so daft and posy!

Clothes swap Party

So, who made it a New Year’s resolution to declutter? To make or thrift more of their clothes? Maybe to get rid of things they don’t use/need/want any more? I know I did!

Clothes swap (or ‘swishing’) parties can be a great way to encourage yourself (and your friends) to go through your wardrobe and get rid of anything that doesn’t fit, doesn’t suit you, or you’ve never worn (such as those impulse buys that “would be really cute if you just altered the sleeves and took the hem up and got a matching cardigan from somewhere). Lets face it - it can be a bit of a painful process parting with things from our wardrobes. Often we’ve got a bit of emotional attachment to them - things we wore back when we were a different size, things that were our ‘favourite item of clothing’ maybe ten years ago, things with the hope of ‘if I just adjusted this, it would look really cute!’ attached to them. Now imagine that instead of just giving those items to a charity store, they find new homes with your friends, who love them and wear them and get joy out of them. Kinda takes the pain away, doesn’t it? Especially if you happen to get ‘new’ things in return.

So, what is a clothes swapping party? In a nutshell, it’s when you get a group of girls together at someones house. Everyone brings along garments and accessories they don’t want/fit/like anymore, and then you all swap things! Think of it as an afternoon of free, eco-friendly shopping. You get rid of some the garments taking up valuable space in your wardrobe, and get a bunch of ‘new’ things to take home instead (that actually fit you!).

“How many of those garments in your wardrobe never get worn?”

I host a clothes swap party for my friends about every 4 months, and have done for a couple of years now. After that much practice, we’ve got it down to a fine art - how to keep it fair, fast-moving, and fun. Here’s how I run my clothes swap parties.

The venue

Ideally, you’ll want to be in someones home for this, as there will be a lot of trying on of clothes. You’ll need a decent amount of space (I have an open-plan living area in my house, and we use the dining room, lounge, and also one of the bedrooms). You’ll also need a fair bit of privacy - kick the men out for the day, or make them promise to stay locked up in their man-caves with their video games (I’ve found a good way to do this is encourage them to have man-dates with their friends. Go bowling, whatever).

Make sure you’ve got at least a couple of decent, preferably full-length, mirrors. The more the better - you’re going to have a lot of girls wanting to see what they look like in clothes!

The date

Some people expect clothes swap parties to only take an hour or so. I can assure you, this is NOT the case! Allow a good 4-5 hours for everything - often you’ll be amazed at how much some of your guests will bring along to swap, and you want to make sure you’ve got time for people to try things on and have catch-ups with friends as well.

The guest list

Anywhere between 3-15 girls is a good number to invite. If there’s only 3-5 of you, it’s best to make sure you’re all similar sizes. If you’re expecting more than 6 girls, don’t worry about the size range of the girls you invite - girls change size over time, and often you’ll find a wide range of sizes in the garments that your guests will bring. Also, even if someone doesn’t find many clothes in their size, you’ll be swapping accessories, so everyone will walk away with something. Don’t invite more than around 15 girls or you swap will take hours.

What should people bring?

Encourage your guests to bring anything they don’t want anymore, as long as it’s in decent condition (no holes, stains, etc). You’ll be surprised at what people are excited to find at a clothes swap! It’s good to encourage people to bring accessories as well - bags, shoes, jewellery. That way, if any of your guests are having trouble finding clothes that fit, they can still find something pretty to take home with them. I usually encourage everyone to bring a plate of something to share for afternoon tea as well, to keep the energy levels up and make it even more of a girls get-together.

How to set up the swapping area

Swapping can take a long time - you want to keep it fast and fun. We’ve found that the best way to do this is by grouping garments based on type and size right at the start - you then work your way through the different sizes, and people know when to pay attention for “their” size.

Garments come in two “types” at swaps - those that fit on the top half (tops and dresses) and those that fit on the bottom half (trousers and skirts). Lets face it - many of us girls are different sizes in top and bottom! Encourage your guests to separate their garments into “top half” and “bottom half” piles before they arrive at the swap - it’ll save you a lot of time on the day.

Set up areas for each type of garment - we usually put “top half” garments in one room, and “bottom half” garments in another. Put size labels in each of these rooms - make sure you’ve got a space in each room for each common size. When your guests arrive, get them to sort their garments into the appropriate sizes in the appropriate space.

How to run the swap
This also depends a bit on how many people you have at the swap. If you’ve got 8 or less people, choose a garment type (“top half” fitting or “bottom half” fitting) and work your way through the sizes. If you’ve got more than 8 people there, split up into three groups based on size (once again, you’ll need to choose whether you’re starting with “top half” or “bottom half” garments). Each sub-group will then take the size range that matches them and conduct their own “mini swap”. (We’ve found it works well if you’ve separated garments into 5 different size ranges - lets call them size 1, 2, 3, 4, and 5 for simplicity. The three sub-groups will take sizes 1, 3 or 5 for their mini swaps. After each group has gone through their pile, get everyone back together and split into two groups for the size 2 and 4 garments. This keeps everything fair, as often girls can fit two different sizes.)
Make one person in charge of holding up the garments and calling out their details, and another person in charge of drawing tokens for items that more than one person is interested in As each garment is held up, anyone who is interested in it puts up their hand. If only one person is interested, it’s theirs. If no one is interested, it gets put aside to go to a charity shop (or back to it’s original owner if they want it back).
But what happens if more than one person wants an item? One thing we’ve found works really well is to hand everyone a token when they arrive. When more than one person is interested in a particular item, they put their tokens into a container and someone else draws one at random. If your token gets draw, you get the item. It keeps everything fair and means there’s no favouritism.

Trying things on

After you’ve gone through the swapping piles, it’s time to try things on! Yay! Lots of fun and laughter follows.

At this point, pretty much everyone will find that something they’ve picked up doesn’t fit or doesn’t suit them. You’ll find that everyone will start giving enthusiastic feedback about what suits or doesn’t suit people, suggesting other things for people to try on, and swapping garments amongst themselves. It’ll be a bit crazy, and quite fun. Just remind people to keep hold of the garments they were wearing when they arrived, as it’s easy to lose them in the chaos!
The round-up

Everyone is always curious to see what everyone else got. After the trying-on madness is over, it’s nice to bring everyone back together again, have something to drink, and everyone can do a show-and-tell. Then people get to see what new homes their garments have found, and you can see the excitement as people have discovered new favourite items for their wardrobes.

Chances are, you’ll be left with quite a lot of things that no one wanted. Charity shops are a great way to get rid of these to somewhere that will use them and keeps that feel-good feeling going, too.

So there we have it - my tips on how to run a clothes swap party. I encourage you to give it a go - they’re heaps of fun! :-)

Name & Blog: Hi Everyone, I’m Dibs from Dibs and the Machine, and I’m standing in today for Rachel. I’m so happy to be helping Rachel out, as she is such a lovely person, beautiful both in and out, and intelligent and creative to boot. Okay, I think I should end here with all the praises….I might as well ‘fess up to the fact that I am trying to psych her up to make me some cupcakes. Did you know she was featured in a paper for winning a desert competition?

Right, now, unto some info about yours truly…..
How long have you been sewing: I’ve been sewing clothes seriously since 2010. Before then I made my curtains and bedlinen for my university room in 1998.My mom would not make them for me, as she desperately wanted me to learn how to sew.
What do you love most about sewing garments: I love the freedom that comes with being able to wear what I want, no matter the season. I love bog bold prints, and fun colours, but you don’t get that all the time here in the UK. I had plans of sewing a pistachio coat this winter, but alas, laziness overpowered me.
What do you hate most about sewing garments: I hate the fact that I do not always get it right. I suppose I should chalk that down to the learning curve.
What do you want to accomplish this year: I am going home to Cameroon in December, and I would love 50% of my wardrobe to be me made…Mr.Dibs seems pleased with this plan…anything to save him some money I think.
Your biggest non-sewing goal of 2012: I’d love to become an adult, and learn how to be a good mother. I am currently Mr.Dibs’s daughter….seriously he is scared of what will happen to his forthcoming baby when he goes to work.
What are your favourite sewing/fashion blogs: I love many sewing blogs, for various reasons, so I’m not going to name any but lets just say House of Pinheiro is one of my fave. I actually stalk her…..and that’s a fact.
What are you wearing: I’m wearing a dress inspired by the Roland Mouret Galaxy dress. Those of you who also read my blog will notice that I DO have a waist in this picture…..Fear not folks, it’s not some act of magic. This is an old picture. The reason I am using this picture is because I am so proud of the way this dress turned out. It was the 2nd thing I made when I started sewing dresses, and it left me traumatised for about 1 month.
Facts:

Pattern: Vogue 8280

Material /Fabric: 100% wool
Notions: 24” zip I think.
Time to complete: I used about 3 days. I was not counting the hours, as I lost track due to too many crying sessions. Mr.Dibs spent the whole time tip-toeing around me….i think he saw fumes coming out of my ears and nostrils every time he dared to ask me a question…I’m not even going to mention the sulphurous looks I gave him every time he tried to tell me to leave the sewing and continue the next day…eek, I just mentioned it. To be honest I’m surprised he survived the project….
Difficulty: At the time, and the level I was at, I would say this was a very difficult pattern for me. I don’t think it will be so difficult if I was to make it again . I am more confident in my sewing now. I really loved the dress, but I think if I had known how stressful it would have been to make, I would not have attempted it. That said, if you are a beginner, do not listen to me. Try it. Some people learn faster when they tackle more challenging projects.

First worn: February 2010, 30 minutes after completing it, to a party. I got so many compliments.
Wear again: I wore it throughout 2010, to office and other places. Sadly it does not fit anymore, and I have no clue where it is right now. I intend to make another one this year.

Pattern Construction: The flange was a bit big though, so you might want to make a muslin. I did not, and I suffered for my naïveté.
Would you recommend it to others: Yes. Despite the tears.
Were the instructions easy to follow: The pattern instructions are all over the place. I’d suggest you read the instructions first, and identify the steps you need to take before starting the project, or you will get lost. Believe me, I got lost. Also prepare yourself for a lot of hand sewing. I learned how to understitch on this project.
Pattern alterations or any design changes: I did not do any when I made it, but next time I will reduce the size of the flange, and widen the hips of the skirt. I will also make it in a fabric that has a bit of stretch.
Conclusion: It is a lovely pattern, and if I have managed to scare you away from it, I am sorry. That was not my intention.

I'm so grateful for such a fun day and specially the lovely ladies that brought so many great goodies for the SWAP. I also loved the really fun patterns as they provided the group hours of laugh and it would not be the same without some dubious ones, right?

Even the 'worst' ones could transform into an opportunity in a new light with a bit of creativity.

Rachel L bought these Burda international new and questioned her sanity. No one actually got to take this one home as it was "donated" to the sewing cafe !

My goodies!

The red dotted floaty fabric... well, it will be a blouse and for the surprise factor I shawl not share the patterns ideas just yet .The lovely checked wool from Amanda {Kitschy Coo}I'm thinking about a jacket and would take suggestions... Nothing too complicated!

The flower print cotton stretch from Katie {Monkeysocks }will be a dress for summer so It will be left untouched for a while.The pink and white dots cotton and pattern from SEW is going to Dibs{Dibs and the Machine }!The Amy pattern {Roobeedoo } is so adorable! Thank you.
The other patterns are from Debi {My Happy Sewing Place } and the Mccalls will be my Dickens festival costume this year. Its the 200th anniversary so it would be amazing to enter the dress competition.
I bought 3 metres of a lovely mix of wool/viscose in a brown/tan colour for some 'Trousers Power'- Wide leg & high waist.

A trip to the Arctic ( Crafters’ Ceilidh)

Oh well, judging on how many layers I had on, one can imagine I was heading for a glacial exploration, fear not.. these 'easily cold Brazilian bones' went to Edinburgh for the MOST AMAZING sewing adventure-Crafters’ Ceilidh. And how lucky that the weather was beautiful (well-for most of the time.) I fear I may had mention out loud a couple of times on how I wished I was wearing two pair of trousers... LOL. In case you wondering... yes, I do wear it, not as often as my 1st year of british weather.

I cannot thank enough the wonderful co hostess Debi, Kristen and Kerry, for their care and attention to details. I never been to such organized and smooth event and the whole day was so much fun. I felt so well cared for and enjoy ‘meeting’ many of my favorite reads of the blogworld. I also felt like a reunion of old friends...and I hope to continue to grow these friendships and cultivate many more.

{SW Theme Project} Button Bag Project & Tutorial.

Making a Button Bag by Martha Stewart.

Tools & Materials12-by-24-inch piece and 3-by-24-inch strip of canvas or linen
3-by-24-inch strip of fusible webbing
Pinking shears
Sewing machine
24 inches cotton webbing, for handles
Needle and thread
100 or more buttons per side, depending on placement and button size

Button Bag How-To1. Attach canvas strip to one edge of large canvas piece by sandwiching fusible webbing in between and ironing.

2. Trim the top edge with pinking shears.

3. With right sides facing, fold fabric in half lengthwise, and sew sides together, leaving a 1/2-inch seam allowance. Pink edges, and iron seam open, creating a canvas tube.

4. Shift seam toward center so that it falls 2 inches from one side. Stitch bottom edge, leaving a 1/2-inch seam allowance. Turn bag right side out.

5. To create facing triangles on the bottom of the bag, put one hand inside to hold the bag open, and with the other hand, push the bottom seam inward to start to form a roughly rectangular floor. Then grab the outside corner closest to the side seam, pinch it flat, and fold it toward the center. The triangular point that's formed with this motion has the corner as its tip and the side seam as half the length of its base. Repeat with the other corner, folding it toward the center and matching the first triangle in size.

6. Tack the corners down by hand or machine to secure the triangular folds, sewing along two sides, as shown. In the sides of the tote, create folds by hand to mimic those of a paper bag. Iron them in place.

7. Cut two 12-inch pieces of cotton webbing for handles. Sew the handles to the inside of the bag, set in 1 1/2 inches from the outside edges and 1 inch from the top. On one or both sides of bag, arrange buttons in desired color and pattern. Dab each with fabric glue; sew onto fabric with needle and thread.

{SW Challenge: Buttons} "Budgie" Cardigan

This week SEW WEEKLY challenge was a technical challenge using ' Buttons'. As my machine can make my button casing and I'm so busy with my course work something had to give. Refashion an item using buttons looked like the perfect solution for des-stashing my buttons cupboards while perfecting hand sewing skill as part of my sewing improvement plan for 2012.

Phsss! Its a Sewing(worst kept) secret....

Before I start with my 2012 sewing plans I wanted to review some sewing" secrets" I learn over 2011!

Some my fellow sewist swear by using muslin or toile. I’m not going to debate that’s or not a very good tool. Its all personal taste. I do a "paper toile" every time. Pin fitting is a 'Must' on my book. I seen others using Swedish paper and even gardening soil retainer instead of fabric! Extra points for creativity and thriftiness !A perfect fusion of paper/fabric .

Notice two main adjustments style of patterns: Measurement difference or Block difference.

Measurement and re-draft the pattern by the spread technique toile using gingham grid reference than changing to master pattern. Others just create a professional basic block and reference to every new pattern. what do you do?

I have careful consideration to where my pockets are. If you want to look slimmer the best trick is to move pockets ½ to 1” toward the back past the normal pocket positions on patterns.

I love tailoring and think is our best friend. It will equalize and conceal disproportionate parts of the body, and because they are not tight fitting, less fitting fiddle. Hurray.

You can hide any stomach bulge by wearing a lower cut waistband and angle pleas instead of having them straight.

Gok Wan swear by shoulder pads. Do or don’t? Not for me....

You can also change some basic pattern tampering hems and trousers hems. If you make your skirt hems ¼” longer in the back than the front you will look taller.

If you cannot find the right colour thread, use one that is a bit darker.

Care for your scissors and don’t use your fabric scissors to cut paper patterns as they will loose their sharpness faster but you can cut slippery fabrics with paper to create more stability as long as the scissors are not always cutting paper.
